Isis, Mysteries of
   Egyptian religious ceremony which became widespread over the Mediterranean area, and which was still being performed in the sixth century A.D. They cover the death and resurrection of Osiris, and the hiding of his coffin in a tree trunk at Byblos, from which Isis excised him. The best description is in Plutarch’s De Iside et Osiride.
